30 Days of Biking
April has returned so that means 30 days of biking begins and this years kick of landed on a beautiful spring day. Past years it has rained, snow suits have been worn and tears have been shed. Well the last one is true almost every year. The weather is cold and we all cry, the kids are not old enough to do this and melts downs are all over the map, or this year the miles were past our thresh hold. Yep it's true! Lots of tears, but yet every year we do this...
Scott's sister came down and joined Scott for a donut ride that a bike shop puts on in uptown. They go for about a hour ride around town and end up at a different donut shop each week. So they went and did that and the kids and I met them at the donut shop. After we ate our sugar and landed in a coma, Anna and I drove to go get the van that had the rest of the families bikes so we could do the next bike ride together.
Two bike rides in one day was a little crazy!
The second ride was the kick of for 30 days of biking. So they want you to ride your bike every day the whole month of April. It doesn't have to be a long ride it can be around the block or down your driveway. But they want to ride!! This year there were hundreds of people that showed up probably because the weather was ideal. We started at the new viking stadium and they lead us on a bike ride along the river and through the neighborhoods and up millions of hills. The kids, Anna and I had no clue what we were getting in to and how long this ride was. Well by mile 11 we were done. They did not eat lunch before leaving at noon, they have not rode there bikes since last fall, and the cranky attitudes were flying. Henry was behind me on the tag along bike and I think he petaled maybe 20 min. out of the two hours. Kate was not loving the hills and was slowing down drastically by the minute. She has never been our long distance biker she is the girl that loves the short fun rides. I think we made our way to the back of the big pack to be dead last and we called it a good ride and we went back to the car and loaded up the bikes.
We stopped at Whole Foods for lunch and ice cream and drove our sun burn, tired bodies home to collapse. As we reflected on how that ride went with each other I remember hearing we are awesome from other bikers as we were biking along. I had to laugh because inside we were cranky angry and pissy to say the least. Yes we got our whole family out biking and doing stuff but that takes a toll on you. It's not easy do that and motivating the whole family to keep it up when you were not feeling it as well. Getting moving after a long winter being fairly dormant you have to build that back up. We were sore for the whole weekend to say the least. I am proud we did it but I think preparation was not done on our part and that is a key thing for parents with kids.
Sunday turned out to be a cloudy rainy day and it was good that we were able to fully enjoy our Saturday. Today has been planning for the month doing stuff that fills our buckets and gets up moving. I find if I plan, write, schedule it I am more accountable to do it. I hope you had a great weekend.
